Colorectal Cancer

Malignant change in cells of the large intestine or rectum.

It often begins as benign polyps on the wall of the colon. Over time, some evolve into a cancer that crosses the bowel wall.

Warning signs: unexplained weight loss, lasting change in bowel habits, thin stools and, above all, blood mixed with the stool. Colonoscopy screening remains the best protection.

More Informations

A common cancer that screening often helps help prevent.

Definition

Colorectal cancer develops in the colon or rectum, most often from a polyp that evolves slowly over several years. Detected early, it is very treatable.

Causes

Age, family history, some inflammatory bowel diseases and lifestyle factors (diet, inactivity, tobacco, alcohol) increase the risk.

Diagnosis

  • Stool test for hidden blood, offered in organised screening.
  • Colonoscopy, which both sees and removes polyps.
  • Imaging to assess extent if a cancer is confirmed.

Treatments

Depending on the stage: removal of the polyp during colonoscopy, surgery of the affected segment, sometimes chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Treatment is decided by a multidisciplinary team and adapted to each person.

Nateen advice

After colon surgery or during treatment, bowel movements can be irregular and hard to hold for a while. Absorbent underwear or a Combi brief with tabs, with a Mati underpad, protects skin and linen; the care team adjusts the choice over time.

Educational content written for families and caregivers. It does not replace a consultation: a doctor, a continence nurse or a physiotherapist makes the diagnosis and chooses the treatment.
